Handmade Printable Journal for a Cause | Beauty for Ashes

There are times when crafting becomes more than just making something pretty.  It becomes a way to encourage, support, and connect with others in a meaningful way. In this project, I’m creating a handmade junk journal for the Beauty for Ashes journal drive, a heartfelt effort supporting women in recovery at Beauty for Ashes Transitional Home in Alexandria, Indiana.

Journaling can play such an important role in healing, reflection, and personal growth. These journals are meant to provide a safe and encouraging place for someone to write, process, and move forward on their journey.

Crafting with Purpose

This project was part of a special journal-making event where creators came together to make journals that will be donated to women working through recovery.

It is easy to feel like something has to be elaborate to matter, but that could not be further from the truth. Even a simple handmade journal can offer comfort, encouragement, and a place for someone to gather their thoughts.

Sometimes the most meaningful projects are the ones created with love, care, and the hope that they will bless someone else.

About the Beauty for Ashes Project

This journal drive was organized by Nicole, from Nicole Prose Sparkle Junkie, who is collecting handmade journals to deliver to Beauty for Ashes Transitional Home in Alexandria, Indiana.

If you feel inspired to create a handmade junk journal for women in recovery, Nicole is continuing to accept journals and will make sure they are delivered to those who can truly use them.

A Simple Handmade Junk Journal

In this video, I created a simple junk journal using printable pages and basic supplies. The goal was to keep it useful, encouraging, and not overly complicated.

Some of the elements included in this journal were:

  • folded printable pages for journaling space
  • pockets and tuck spots
  • inspirational sentiments and quotes
  • lace and layered embellishments
  • a soft structure that can be added to over time

One of the ideas that came up during this project was that a journal does not have to be fancy to be meaningful. Even a simple booklet or altered composition notebook can be a beautiful gift for someone who needs it.

The printable pages I used for this journal were generously shared by Shaylee Morehouse. She offers a variety of printable designs, many of them free to use, which makes projects like this accessible for anyone who wants to create.

It Does Not Have to Be Complicated

If you have ever wanted to create for a cause like this, do not let overthinking stop you. You do not need elaborate supplies, complicated techniques, or perfectly coordinated materials.

What matters most is creating something thoughtful and usable. A little journaling space, a few encouraging details, and a handmade touch can go a long way.

Ideas You Can Use in Your Own Journals

If you would like to make a journal of your own, here are a few simple ideas from this project:

  • Use printable pages mixed with plain or lightly tinted paper for extra writing room.
  • Add pockets or tuck spots for journaling cards and notes.
  • Keep embellishments fairly flat so the journal stays practical and easy to use.
  • Do not overfill the pages. Leave room for the recipient to make it their own.
  • Remember that simple can still be beautiful.

A Creative Project with Heart

This was such a meaningful reminder that our creativity can do more than fill pages. It can encourage, uplift, and make a real difference in someone’s life.

If you enjoy junk journaling, paper crafting, and handmade projects with purpose, I hope this video inspires you to create something heartfelt of your own.

If you decide to watch the video, I’d love to hear what stood out to you most.
