Who says a gift card has to feel boring? In this project, we are turning a simple piece of paper into an origami shirt that becomes the perfect little holder for a gift card.
This handmade card idea is great for Father’s Day, birthdays, thank-you gifts, or anyone who would enjoy a fun surprise tucked inside a folded paper shirt.
Turn a Simple Gift Card into Something Special
Sometimes the presentation is just as meaningful as the gift itself. In this project, I’m sharing how to fold an easy origami shirt that doubles as a gift card holder and attach it to a handmade 6×6 card.
The version I created uses a workshop-themed background with a chambray-inspired paper to resemble a classic work shirt, making it perfect for Father’s Day or anyone who enjoys building, tinkering, or creating.
What You’ll Need
- A piece of paper cut to 6 1/2″ x 9 1/2″
- A 6×6 card base
- Glue
- Optional brads, enamel dots, or tiny buttons
- A gift card to tuck inside the folded shirt
Customize Your Shirt
One of the best things about this project is how easily you can change its personality just by changing the paper.
- Use chambray or denim prints for a work shirt.
- Choose plaids or stripes for a dress shirt.
- Add tiny buttons or brads for extra dimension.
- Draw a simple placket with a pencil or pen for realistic detail.
You can even adapt the design for birthdays, retirement celebrations, thank-you cards, or any occasion where a gift card deserves a little handmade touch.
Creative Variations
The folded shirt can be mounted to the front of a card or tucked inside as a surprise. Experiment with different papers, embellishments, and backgrounds to make every version unique.
Remember, you’re the boss of your own paper! There’s no single right way to create it, so have fun and make it your own.
