These Hummingbird MemoryDex Cards combine cottages, flowers, hummingbirds, and dimensional layering techniques to create charming miniature garden scenes. In this live paper crafting project, I used printable elements, acetate accents, foam adhesive, and layered embellishments to build cards filled with depth, movement, and personality.
While these Hummingbird MemoryDex Cards were designed for a MemoryDex box, the same ideas can easily be adapted for junk journals, folios, happy mail, scrapbook layouts, handmade cards, and other paper crafting projects.
Building Hummingbird MemoryDex Cards
One of my favorite things about MemoryDex cards is that they give you a small canvas to tell a story. Even on a card that is only a few inches wide, you can create depth, perspective, and personality by combining images and building layers.
For this project, I started with simple card bases and gradually built each scene using printable images. By placing elements in front of and behind one another, the cards quickly developed a sense of depth.
Some of the elements included:
- Garden cottages and birdhouses
- Flower clusters and floral arrangements
- Picket fences and garden gates
- Hummingbirds
- Word strips and sentiment pieces
Adding Dimension to Hummingbird MemoryDex Cards
Layering was the star of this project. Foam adhesive, pop dots, and overlapping images helped create depth throughout the cards.
One of my favorite details was using acetate to suspend a hummingbird above the scene. This simple technique creates movement and gives the illusion that the bird is actually hovering among the flowers.
Small touches such as Nuvo Drops, dimensional adhesives, and layered floral elements helped bring each scene to life.
