Have you ever sat down to create and thought, “I have absolutely no idea what I’m going to make.” Believe it or not, that’s often exactly where my favorite projects begin.
When I started working on this junk journal signature for our Friendship Journals on a Journey event, I didn’t have a finished design sketched out in my mind. I had a journal in front of me, a pile of papers nearby, a few notes about the recipient, and a willingness to see where the creative path would lead.
What Is a Friendship Journal?
If you’ve never participated in one, a friendship journal is exactly what it sounds like—a journal that travels from person to person, with each participant adding their own signature or pages before sending it on to the next creative friend. By the time it returns home, it has become a collaborative work of art filled with techniques, stories, memories, and little pieces of everyone’s personality.
Our group has spent months passing these journals around, and every time I open one, I can’t help but smile. They’re overflowing with inspiration, and no two are ever alike.
Creating for Someone Else Changes Everything
This month’s journal belongs to Jen, so instead of simply choosing papers I liked, I found myself thinking about her. She enjoys lakes, loves vintage style, works as a school nurse, appreciates animals and children, and calls Kansas home. Suddenly, a map page wasn’t just a map—it became a meaningful detail. A dictionary page wasn’t just filler—it became an opportunity to highlight a word that connected to her story.
That’s one of my favorite things about personalized journaling. The little decisions matter.
As I worked, I gathered maps, dictionary pages, music paper, onion skin paper, lace, fabric scraps, envelopes, coffee filters, and bits of ephemera. None of them were remarkable by themselves. Together, they started telling a story.
One Layer Leads to Another
I think a lot of people believe experienced crafters have every project completely planned before they begin. The truth? Many of us are simply making one decision after another.
I wonder if this map would work.
I wonder if this envelope could become a pocket.
I wonder if this little piece of lace needs to be tucked underneath instead of on top.
One choice leads to another until suddenly a page has taken shape.
In this video, you’ll actually see that happen in real time. I change my mind, adjust ideas, ask for opinions from viewers, and let the signature develop naturally instead of forcing it into a rigid plan.
Permission to Play
If there’s one lesson I hope this project shares, it’s that you don’t have to know the ending before you begin. Creativity isn’t about following a perfect blueprint. Sometimes it’s about trusting yourself enough to take the next small step.
Pull out that map you’ve been saving. Use the dictionary page you’ve been hanging onto. Turn an envelope into a pocket. Add the scrap of lace that’s been sitting in your stash for years.
You might discover that your favorite page is the one you never planned.
A Journal That Becomes a Treasure
One of the things I love most about these friendship journals is that they become more than keepsakes. They’re also idea books. Every signature introduces a new technique, a different perspective, or an unexpected way to combine materials. Long after the event is over, the journal continues to inspire.
I can’t wait to see the finished collection when it comes back home to its owner.
If you’d like to watch this signature come together one layer at a time, the video is embedded below. I hope it encourages you to embrace the process, trust your instincts, and enjoy the journey just as much as the finished project.
