Sometimes the best paper crafting projects start with a simple prompt—and then take on a life of their own.
For this month’s Vintage Wednesday event with The Crafty Bunch, our challenge was to include at least one postcard in the project. I decided to pull out a vintage-style postcard and see where inspiration would lead.
If you’ve crafted with me before, you already know… I love folios with flips, flaps, pockets, and little interactive details. So naturally this postcard turned into a mini folio adventure!
Starting with a Simple Card Base
The base of this project started with a simple folded card structure. From there, I layered in additional flaps and folded elements to create movement and interactive spaces.
One of my goals was to preserve the vintage postcard itself instead of trimming it down to fit. Rather than cutting away the border and losing that classic postcard feel, I adjusted the folds and construction to let the postcard remain intact.
Sometimes changing the structure is more satisfying than changing the focal element.
Adding Layers, Lace & Vintage Details
Once the structure was in place, the fun part began.
- Rounded corners for a softer vintage feel
- Layered pockets for tucked-away treasures
- Ledger paper accents
- Lace details and soft fabric textures
- Vintage-inspired stamping
- A ribbon wrap closure
One of my favorite parts was creating a simple wrap closure using ribbon and a punched opening. It’s easy, flexible, and works beautifully on folios of all kinds.
Unexpected Discoveries Along the Way
If you’ve ever watched a live craft session, you know that projects don’t always go exactly according to plan—and honestly, that’s part of the fun.
There were a few moments of adjusting folds, changing plans, and making creative decisions as the project developed. Some of my favorite ideas happen that way.
We also tucked in a tiny scene from my Village Friends & Moments printable collection and layered in details to create little places for journaling and interactive elements.
Finished… or Still Becoming?
This project wasn’t completely finished during the live—and that’s okay.
Sometimes paper crafting is about following inspiration instead of forcing a project to be complete on camera.
I’ll continue adding details and refining this little folio, but I already love the direction it took with the postcard, pockets, and layered textures.
Have you ever created a project that changed directions halfway through? I’d love to hear about it.
