Shaker Element for Journal Pages | Tiny Tuesday Tutorial

If you’re looking for a fun way to add a little movement and interest to your journal pages, this shaker element is such a playful option!

In this week’s Tiny Tuesday, I tried a different way to make a shaker element using a window envelope. Let’s just say… it didn’t go quite as smoothly as I expected 😂 But that’s real crafting, right?

What Is a Shaker Element?

A shaker element is a small interactive feature where tiny items like beads or sequins are sealed inside a clear window. When you move it, everything shakes around inside, adding movement and a fun surprise to your page.

This type of detail is perfect for junk journals, mini albums, and folios — especially when you want to add something a little unexpected.

How I Made This Shaker Element

For this project, I used a window envelope as the base for my shaker. The idea was simple — but the process turned into a bit of an adventure!

  • Cut down a window envelope to fit the journal page
  • Add a backing piece with a printed design
  • Use foam adhesive to build up dimension around the window
  • Add shaker elements like seed beads
  • Seal the top layer to create the shaker effect

Even though it took a few twists and turns, the end result is a really fun interactive piece that adds movement and texture to the page.

Tips for Making Shaker Elements

  • Use double layers of foam adhesive if your shaker pieces need more room
  • If your elements stick due to static, try a tiny bit of cornstarch or an embossing powder tool
  • Make sure your adhesive creates a complete seal around the window
  • Don’t overfill — a little goes a long way!

Final Thoughts

Sometimes projects don’t go exactly as planned… and that’s okay! This shaker element may have been a little more adventurous than expected, but it still turned into a fun and creative addition to the page.

And the best part? I actually have a much easier way to make these — so that might just be coming up in the next Tiny Tuesday 😉
