Sometimes the best craft supplies are already hiding in your closet.
During the Denim & Diamonds Event, I decided to turn an old pair of jeans into a composition notebook cover. I have always enjoyed altering composition notebooks, but this project added a fun twist by using real denim and an authentic jean pocket.
Rather than simply adding a pocket to the front, I covered the entire notebook with denim from a worn pair of jeans. The faded fabric, visible seams, and natural wear marks gave the project instant character before I added a single embellishment.
One of my favorite parts of the project was preserving the pocket as a functional feature. It still works as a pocket and can hold journal cards, notes, bookmarks, photos, tags, or other little treasures. Practical details like that always make a project more enjoyable to use.
As I worked, I discovered something I had never really noticed before. The denim frayed differently depending on the direction of the threads. Pulling the fibers along the top edge created a different look than along the sides, giving the notebook even more texture and personality.
To finish the inside, I added coordinating patterned papers and simple pockets for storing notes and ephemera. The yellow accents were inspired by the event graphics and paired beautifully with the blue denim.
Of course, the project still needed a little “diamonds” to go with the denim. A rhinestone embellishment and a sparkly Wrangler-inspired “W” on the pocket added just the right amount of shine while keeping the notebook useful and approachable.
This project was a wonderful reminder that creative inspiration can come from everyday items. Before tossing out an old pair of jeans, consider what parts might be repurposed into journals, notebooks, tote bags, pockets, or mixed media projects. Sometimes the most interesting supplies already have a story to tell.
