In this watercolor techniques session, I’m sharing a relaxed, real-time creative process where we experiment, adjust, and see what actually works.
This project was originally created during the Let It Flow: A Watercolor Gathering event with The Crafty Bunch, Facebook group, and it turned into a fun mix of watercolor play, a few surprises, and a simple tiny house scene using stamps and Tombow markers.

What This Watercolor Session Covers
This wasn’t a step-by-step “perfect” tutorial—and honestly, that’s part of what makes it so useful. We explore how watercolor behaves on different surfaces and how to adapt when things don’t go quite as expected.
- Watercolor experimenting on different surfaces
- Coffee filter vs watercolor paper results
- Simple color mixing and blending
- Tombow marker watercolor technique
- Stamped tiny house scene
- Quick ideas for grass, flowers, and sky
Watercolor Play (and Why It Matters)
Sometimes the best way to get started is to simply play with color. Even when something doesn’t turn out the way you expected (hello, coffee filter experiment 😄), you still learn how your materials behave.
That knowledge makes your next project easier—and often better.
Creating Easy Watercolor Houses
After experimenting with backgrounds, I moved into creating a small stamped house scene using Art Impressions stamps and Tombow markers.
This technique is perfect for paper crafters because:
- You don’t have to draw everything from scratch
- You can pull color from stamped lines using water
- Layering color creates soft shading and depth
- It works beautifully for cards, tags, and journal elements
Simple Watercolor Techniques Used
- Stamping multiple times to create depth and dimension
- Pulling pigment with a damp brush for soft shading
- Using Tombow markers as a watercolor medium
- Adding small details like grass, flowers, and sky
And one of the best reminders from this session?
You don’t have to fill every space. Even a hint of sky or background color can bring your scene to life.
