If you’re looking for upcycle ideas using everyday items, this project shows how to turn a window envelope and a DVD case into something creative and functional.
In this tutorial, a window envelope is transformed into a dimensional shaker element deep enough to hold buttons, then attached to the front of a DVD case to create a decorative storage piece.
This is an edited version of a previously recorded live.
How This Project Works
This project focuses on building dimension inside a window envelope so it can function as a shaker element using buttons instead of sequins. Even though I layered chipboard strips to create the depth needed for movement, you could use things you may have on hand. The finished shaker piece is then attached to the front of a repurposed DVD case, creating a decorative container that can be used for ephemera or other small items.
Materials Used
- Window envelope
- DVD case
- Chipboard or cardboard for layering depth
- Patterned paper
- Buttons
- Fabric and lace
- Ink for distressing edges
- Glue
- Basic paper crafting tools
Ideas for Using This Project
This project can be adapted in different ways depending on what materials you have on hand. I think the finished piece could be used to hold ephemera, small craft supplies, embellishments, or other creative bits.
